The History of La Lanterna

The Story of Our Restaurants
valerio martinolli, 1970

Our first restaurant, La Lanterna City Centre, is Glasgow’s oldest family-run Italian restaurant, still in the hands of the original owners today.

Opened in 1970 by Valerio Martinolli & Antonio Fassone, the restaurant continues to enjoy unrivalled success and an array of award wins, including ‘Best Restaurant’ and ‘Best Wine List’ in 2016.

In 1998, Valerio’s son Christopher, and his business partner, Luca, assumed control of the restaurant and ever since then the restaurant has maintained its position as one of the finest Italian restaurants in the city. In 2015, the restaurant underwent a massive £250k refurbishment, transforming the interiors into a stunningly bright and modern space, allowing room for even more diners to visit. With a wealth of experience in the industry, coupled with their loyal customer base built over 47 years, Christopher, Luca, and the team regularly receive positive reviews.

By 2017, owners Chris and Luca were planning their next move; to introduce the La Lanterna to Glasgow’s West End. The opening of the second restaurant heralded the arrival of a fresh dining experience to the West End, bringing with it the much-loved La Lanterna warmth, style of service and, of course, authentic Italian cooking honed from decades of experience.
